General Motors' self-driving subsidiary, Cruise, is gearing up to recommence testing its robotaxis in Phoenix, AZ, with the inclusion of safety drivers, Bloomberg reported.
Bloomberg said sources familiar with the matter said Cruise would announce and begin testing as soon as April 9. Cruise "had not set a timeline for deployment. We are in the process of meeting with officials in select markets to gather information, share updates and rebuild trust," spokesman Pat Morrissey told Bloomberg.
In October 2023, a Cruise robotaxi was involved in an accident with a pedestrian in San Fransisco. The California Department of Motor Vehicles quickly announced it had suspended Cruise's deployment and driverless testing permit, due to an “unreasonable risk to public safety," and it would not reinstate Cruise’s permit until certain steps are taken, which the company has been provided.
Cruise later temporarily halted its operations in other U.S. cities, including Phoenix, Houston, Austin, Dallas and Miami.
