In recognition of his commitment to community service and leadership, David Co, owner of Maaco in Hayward, CA, has been awarded the 2024 Terry Taylor Award. The accolade honors Maaco franchisees who exemplify selflessness, support their communities and inspire others.
Co’s dedication goes far beyond running a successful auto repair and paint shop. For the past 17 years, his Maaco franchise has served Hayward residents, but his true impact lies in his community work.
“I believe it is important to help those in need in your community and to tackle challenges with positive, proactive solutions,” Co said.
His efforts focus on providing housing, jobs and pathways to independence for vulnerable populations across California’s East Bay area.
A member of the boards for local organizations Mercy Cares and City Serve of the Tri-Valley, Co actively raises funds, provides hands-on support and inspires others to take action. His work addresses issues like homelessness, hunger and at-risk youth.
Among his notable initiatives, Co supported the creation of a Christian youth theater program and raised funds to establish centers for the homeless.
“I am always passionate about helping people financially, physically and mentally to overcome the challenges in their path,” Co said.
His contributions include financial support for building homeless shelters and spearheading after-school programs that provide safe spaces for children.
David Gross, Maaco’s senior vice president of franchise services, praised Co’s influence.
“Our franchise network is stronger because of individuals like David,” Gross said. “Everything he does is rooted in selflessness.”
The Terry Taylor Award, established in 2014, honors the legacy of Terry Taylor, a franchisee who dedicated his life to community service. The award highlights franchisees who embody Taylor’s values of generosity, leadership and engagement. As the award’s 10th recipient, Co continues to set a standard for Maaco franchisees nationwide.
Co encourages others to take action: “Look around and identify ways to help the community, no matter how small. Giving back is critical, especially when you’ve been blessed with a great career, family and life.”
